The Azores are formed by nine different islands, all from volcanic origin. São Miguel, the biggest island, is constituted by six volcanic complexes, of which two are extinct. The Azores have no official date of discovery but there are some reports that show us that in the 14th century there were already maps of the azorean islands. We currently know that the settlement in the Azores began in 1427. São Miguel island was populated with people that came from the interior part of mainland Portugal and. Later, due to the Azores being a strategic point for boats, it was colonized by other nationalities, such as french and english. The Azores had several economic cultures along the centuries but the main ones were the orange, the whale hunting and the tea plantations. Nowadays, the main economic resources are livestock, tourism, civil construction and fishing.
